The Palácio de Seteais is marked by a massive neoclassical arch, built in eighteen oh two to connect two wings of the building. Daniel Gildemeester, a Dutch consul, constructed the original villa on land granted by the Marquis of Pombal. When the royal family stayed here in eighteen oh two, the arch was erected to commemorate their visit. According to local legend, the name Seteais comes from the seven sighs of the Portuguese people during the signing of a humiliating treaty in eighteen oh seven.
