Jardim Correnteza

The Jardim Correnteza sits on a sharp bend of the road, defined by a long, waist-high stone wall topped with ornate wrought-iron railings. It exists because nineteenth century travelers needed a place to stop and catch their breath before reaching the palaces higher up the mountain. In eighteen eighty-two, the local municipality cleared this small patch of land to create a viewing platform. From here, the carriages could turn around easily while passengers looked down across the valley toward the Atlantic Ocean.
