The two massive, conical white chimneys rise like twin towers above the tiled rooftops of the old town. This palace served as the summer retreat for the Portuguese royal family for centuries, growing from a Moorish fortification into a sprawling complex of courtyards and ornate chambers. King Joao the First once ordered a vast kitchen built beneath those chimneys to prepare feasts for his court. He decorated the walls with blue and white tiles to show off his wealth to visiting guests.
