Torre do Relógio

The Torre do Relógio rises above the rooftops of the Sintra town center with a distinct, weathered stone facade and a prominent clock face that governs the local pace. This structure serves as the bell tower for the neighboring Church of Saint Peter. In the nineteenth century, the tower became a focal point for town disputes when the municipal council and the church officials fought over who held the keys to the clock mechanism and, consequently, who decided when the workday began.
