Bab Sharif

Bab Sharif stands out as the most prominent remaining gate of the old Jeddah wall, identified by its two sturdy, square towers framing a central archway. While the original fortifications were built in the sixteenth century to defend the city, this gate served as the primary southern entrance for pilgrims traveling toward Mecca. In nineteen forty-seven, the scholar Muhammad Hasan Fiqi captured the gate’s atmosphere, describing how the air grew thick with the scents of spices and incense carried by caravans arriving from the desert.
