Jeddah Historical Wall

The Jeddah Historical Wall consists of limestone and coral blocks rising from the edges of Al Balad. Built in the middle of the sixteenth century, the fortifications protected the port city against naval attacks from Portuguese fleets. It enclosed the district with six massive gates that regulated trade and movement into the city for centuries. In nineteen forty-seven, the city outgrew these boundaries, and the local government ordered the wall dismantled to allow for modern expansion. Today, only small fragments of the masonry remain.
