The Bridewell features a stark, sand-colored stone facade with heavily barred, arched windows that sit low to the street level. This building served as a nineteenth century police station and holding facility for prisoners awaiting trial at the nearby courts. In eighteen sixty-two, Charles Dickens visited this site during his stay in Liverpool. He described the grim cells and the constant stream of people flowing through the charge office, capturing the harsh realities of Victorian criminal justice within these very walls.
