The Merchant occupies a low-slung, white-painted corner building on Slater Street with a wide, industrial-style courtyard hidden behind its high brick walls. Originally a wholesale fruit and vegetable warehouse serving the old city markets, it retains the heavy, utilitarian bones of a nineteenth-century loading dock. Today, the gravel-filled courtyard functions as a massive beer garden, where the original loading bays frame the seating areas. It serves as a rare open-air pocket in the dense grid of the Ropewalks district.
