Edmondston-Alston House

The Edmondston-Alston House features a high, double-tiered piazza that stretches across its facade, facing directly onto the Charleston Harbor. Charles Edmondston, a wealthy merchant, built this house in eighteen twenty-five to demonstrate his status at the edge of the Cooper River. Years later, William Alston purchased the property. When the bombardment of Charleston began during the Civil War, Alston’s son watched the fire from the roof, ignoring the falling shells until a family member finally pulled him down to safety.
