St. Michael's Church

religious

St. Michael’s Church stands at the intersection of Broad and Meeting streets, defined by a white steeple that rises one hundred eighty-six feet above the intersection. It was completed in seventeen sixty-one, making it the oldest church building in Charleston. During the American Revolution, the British used the steeple as a lookout point for incoming ships. When the Americans retook the city, they targeted the structure with artillery, leaving a cannonball embedded in the wall of the church’s portico.
