The Robert W. Roper House stands on a high brick foundation, its massive two-story portico overlooking the Charleston harbor. Built in eighteen thirty-eight, the house features four giant Corinthian columns that signal the wealth of a man who made his fortune in rice planting. During the Civil War, the house occupied a dangerous position as Union artillery targeted the city. General William Tecumseh Sherman later admired the structure, even considering it for his own residence had he settled in Charleston after the war.
