Gibbes Museum of Art

The Gibbes Museum of Art stands out for its classical Beaux-Arts facade, defined by the bronze doors and the heavy, sculpted stone that separates it from the neighboring residential houses. It serves as Charleston’s primary art gallery, housing a collection that started when the Carolina Art Association formed in eighteen fifty-eight. During the Civil War, the association scrambled to hide their most valuable canvases in a remote farmhouse to keep them safe from the shelling that ravaged much of the city.
