French Huguenot Church

The French Huguenot Church stands out with its pale pink stucco walls and tall, arched windows that reach toward the roofline. It is the only independent Huguenot church remaining in the United States. When the congregation arrived in Charleston in the sixteen eighties, they fled religious persecution in France to maintain their specific form of Calvinist worship. During the earthquake of eighteen eighty-six, the building suffered massive damage, but the members rebuilt it, preserving the original design and their stubborn commitment to their heritage.
