Nathaniel Russell House Museum

The Nathaniel Russell House carries a curved, three-story cantilevered staircase that spirals through the center of the building without visible support. Nathaniel Russell, a wealthy merchant from Rhode Island, built this home in eighteen oh eight to display his status in the Charleston shipping trade. The house stands as a primary example of Federal-style architecture, defined by its high ceilings and sunlight. The basement and attic spaces still hold evidence of the enslaved people who maintained the household for the Russell family.
