Unity Alley

Unity Alley is a narrow, brick-paved passage connecting East Bay and State Street, easily identified by the deep, shadowed canyon created by the tall masonry walls on either side. In the eighteen hundreds, this was a hotbed of political activity. The alley earned its name because it housed the meeting rooms of the Union Society, a group that gathered here to debate the politics of the day. One night, a heated argument between opposing factions escalated, resulting in a physical brawl right across these bricks.
