The brick facade at two Unity Alley features a doorway topped by a heavy, faded lintel that has survived since the late seventeen hundreds. This building served as a long tavern and ballroom where George Washington once attended a banquet in seventeen ninety-one. Edward McCrady operated the tavern here, turning the space into a central hub for the city elite. Today, the structure hides a modern kitchen behind those weathered walls, holding onto the original floorboards that hosted Charleston’s earliest social gatherings.
