Heyward-Washington House

The Heyward-Washington House features a double staircase rising from the pavement to a porch supported by heavy brick columns. Thomas Heyward Junior, a signer of the Declaration of Independence, bought this home in seventeen seventy-two. Years later, he rented the property to the city of Charleston to host George Washington during his week-long visit in seventeen ninety-one. The President stayed in the front bedroom on the second floor, sleeping in a room that still holds original eighteenth-century furniture and local woodwork.
