Charleston City Market

The Charleston City Market stretches for four city blocks, marked by a long, low roof supported by sturdy Greek Revival columns. Since eighteen forty-one, this shed has housed vendors selling everything from fresh produce to sweetgrass baskets. During the Civil War, the market remained open even as the city faced bombardment. A local butcher named Henry Cauthen famously kept his stall running while shells fell nearby, determined to supply food to neighbors who refused to leave their homes.
