John Rutledge House Inn

The John Rutledge House Inn features an intricate wrought-iron balcony that displays the initials of the original owner. John Rutledge signed the United States Constitution here in seventeen eighty-seven. He hosted President George Washington for a formal breakfast in this house just four years later. The building survived the Great Charleston Earthquake of eighteen eighty-six, though the tremors caused severe structural damage that necessitated extensive repairs to the grand staircase and the ballroom walls. The residence remains a primary example of Charleston colonial architecture.
