The Lila Cockrell Theatre is identified by its glass-walled lobby and the sweeping, curved roofline that hangs over the San Antonio River. Built in nineteen seventy-two as part of the expansion for the HemisFair convention complex, it serves as a stage for everything from ballet to touring Broadway shows. Its namesake, Lila Cockrell, worked for decades in local government, including a stint as the city's first female mayor, and spent much of her career fighting to keep the downtown riverfront accessible to the public.
