The Cathedral of San Fernando anchors the west side of Main Plaza with its stone facade and carved arched entrance. Canary Islanders laid the cornerstone for this church in seventeen thirty-eight, establishing the religious heart of the villa. During the siege of the Alamo in eighteen thirty-six, Mexican General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna raised a red flag from the cathedral tower, signaling that no quarter would be given to the defenders inside the mission walls a few blocks away.
