The Menger Hotel features a three-story Victorian limestone facade that stands out against the modern glass of downtown San Antonio. William Menger built this place in eighteen fifty-nine to house the German immigrants pouring into the city. He attached a brewery to the back, cooling the hotel cellars with ice from his own plant. Teddy Roosevelt sat in the lobby bar here in eighteen ninety-eight, recruiting his Rough Riders before they shipped out to the Spanish-American War.
