The Founders Monument

The Founders Monument is a twenty-foot tall granite pillar topped with a bronze finial, situated in a small plaza near the San Antonio River. It marks the site where Spanish officials and friars gathered in seventeen thirty-one to officially establish the town of San Fernando de Bexar. When the monument was unveiled in nineteen thirty-one, descendants of those original Canary Islander families watched as city leaders honored the ancestors who transformed a small mission outpost into a permanent civilian municipality.
