St George’s Anglican Church

The square, white sandstone tower of Saint George’s Anglican Church stands out against the dark basalt wall behind it. Designed by the colonial architect John Lee Archer in eighteen thirty-six, the church serves the community of Battery Point. Its most famous feature is the distinctive, almost oversized bell tower that was intended to act as a landmark for ships entering the harbor. The original bell was salvaged from a shipwreck in the eighteen thirties and still rings across the neighborhood today.
