The French Embassy in Sofia occupies a grand nineteenth century mansion on Oborishte Street, recognizable by its pale yellow facade and the tricolor flag hanging near the entrance. Built in eighteen eighty-five for the merchant Ivan Peev, the residence passed through various hands before the French government purchased it in nineteen oh nine. During the second world war, diplomat Henri Hoppenot hid members of the Bulgarian resistance here, providing them temporary refuge while the building remained under the protection of French diplomatic immunity.
