Embassy of Austria

other

The Austrian Embassy in Sofia sits behind a facade of ornate, cream-colored stucco and intricate wrought-iron balconies that contrast sharply with the neighboring stone buildings. This nineteenth-century mansion belonged to Ivan Geshov, one of the wealthiest bankers in Bulgarian history. When the building became an embassy in nineteen thirty-six, the diplomats inherited a ballroom that once hosted the city's most exclusive society gatherings. High-ranking officials still conduct their business today within those same heavily gilded, velvet-lined rooms of the Geshov house.
