The Monument to the Tsar Liberator sits on a high granite pedestal, topped by a bronze horseman representing the Russian Emperor Alexander the Second. He holds a manifesto declaring war on the Ottoman Empire in eighteen seventy-seven. Sculptor Arnoldo Zocchi spent years on the project, famously incorporating portraits of the Bulgarian revolutionary heroes and Russian generals into the lower friezes. When the monument was unveiled in nineteen oh three, the actual Russian prince who had led the liberation troops was present to see it.
