The Ancient Serdica complex reveals itself through a sprawling network of glass-covered ruins nestled directly beneath the busy level of the modern city. These stone foundations belong to the Roman town of Serdica, once a strategic hub during the second through sixth centuries. Beneath the street grade, you can trace the original decumanus maximus, the main east-to-west thoroughfare of the settlement. Roman emperor Constantine the Great supposedly favored this site, famously declaring that Serdica was his Rome.
