Sofia Church of St. George

The Church of Saint George is a compact, red brick rotunda nestled deep within the inner courtyard of a large government complex. Built by the Romans in the fourth century, the structure survived the destruction of the city by Attila the Hun and the subsequent centuries of conflict. When the Ottomans arrived, they converted the building into a mosque and whitewashed the interior walls. Laborers stripping away those layers of plaster in the twentieth century uncovered medieval frescoes dating back to the twelfth century.
