Street art - The candle

A jagged, neon-blue candle sculpture stretches toward the sky above the intersection of Shishman and Gurko streets. It marks the spot where the Bulgarian writer Georgi Markov once stood. In nineteen seventy-eight, Markov waited for a bus here when a stranger bumped into him, leaving a small, poisonous pellet embedded in his leg. He died days later from ricin poisoning. The sculpture holds a small light, meant to keep the memory of that moment burning in the city.
