The Ivan Vazov National Theatre stands out with its bright red facade and six tall marble columns supporting a pediment topped by the golden chariot of Apollo. Designed by Viennese architects, the building opened in nineteen oh seven to serve as the heart of Bulgarian drama. During a performance of a Bulgarian play in nineteen twenty-three, a massive fire broke out, destroying the interior and leaving only the shell. Actors and stagehands saved many costumes and sets by throwing them through the windows.
