The brick walls of Saint Sofia Church wear the scars of seventeen centuries. It stands on the foundations of a Roman amphitheater and multiple earlier churches, yet this structure dates to the sixth century under Emperor Justinian. The city of Sofia takes its name from this very building, a rare instance of a town named for its church rather than a saint. During the Ottoman period, the building served as a mosque, and its original frescoes were plastered over by men who feared graven images.
