The Eastern Gate of Serdika (at underpass level)

The Eastern Gate of Serdika sits below the street level of modern Sofia, protected by a concrete canopy near the Serdika metro station. It consists of two massive semicircular towers flanking a central entrance that served as the primary gateway to the Roman city. When the Roman emperor Constantine the Great considered moving his capital here in the early fourth century, he called Serdika his Rome. Construction crews unearthed these basalt walls while digging the subway lines during the nineteen seventies.
