Western Fortified Gate of Serdica

The Western Fortified Gate of Serdica consists of two massive, rust-colored stone towers framing a central arched entrance. Built in the second century, this structure served as the primary entry point for the Roman city of Serdica, controlling the flow of traffic along the Via Militaris toward the west. Emperor Constantine the Great famously stayed in this city, often calling it his Rome. The heavy masonry of these walls held back Goth raids for decades, effectively shielding the heart of the ancient administrative center.
