The National Art Gallery occupies the former royal palace of the Bulgarian monarchs. Its facade features a mix of neo-baroque and neo-rococo styles that contrast with the brutalist architecture common in Sofia. In nineteen forty-six, after the monarchy was abolished, the new communist government opened these halls to house the national collection. Before the royal family fled, they reportedly left behind an unfinished dinner on the dining table, with silverware still in place, as the regime moved in to claim the rooms.
