Bastion Square

Bastion Square is anchored by the stone foundation of the old Supreme Court building, which sits at the center of a paved plaza built over a filled-in ravine. In eighteen sixty-two, the city constructed a jail and courthouse here, right where the original Hudson Bay Company fort once stood. Hanging gallows stood in the courtyard for years, serving as the city’s site for public executions. Today, the square holds brick-lined walkways and a seasonal market instead of the gallows.
