Inner Harbour Causeway

The Inner Harbour Causeway features broad, tiered concrete steps that bridge the gap between the historic street level and the water. Built in the early twentieth century, this structure transformed the muddy, industrial shoreline into a formal maritime stage. Francis Rattenbury, the architect behind the nearby parliament buildings, designed the Causeway to provide a grand arrival point for travelers arriving by ship. He insisted on the heavy stone retaining walls that still hold back the earth today, anchoring the busy waterfront promenade.
