Market Square

Market Square consists of three sides of heritage brick buildings enclosing a central courtyard. It served as a supply hub for gold miners heading north in the eighteen sixties, when businessmen like Robert Johnson built these warehouses to store flour, mining tools, and hardware. A fire swept through the square in the early days, but the brick shells survived. Today, the courtyards and balconies house shops and offices, connected by wooden walkways that still echo the era when merchants hauled crates of supplies upstairs.
