The neoclassical building on Government Street wears a terra-cotta façade with heavy, ornate columns that once belonged to the Royal Bank of Canada. Alice Munro, the Nobel Prize-winning author, founded this bookstore with her first husband in nineteen sixty-three. They moved the shop into this former banking hall years later. High, coffered ceilings and long, narrow aisles define the interior, where books reach toward the rafters. It remains one of the largest independent bookstores in the country.
