Thunderbird Park

The tall, red cedar totem poles rising above the grass are the defining silhouette of Thunderbird Park. This collection holds some of the finest examples of Northwest Coast Indigenous carving in existence, brought together in the nineteen thirties by the provincial museum to save them from rot and theft. Mungo Martin, a master carver from the Kwakwakaʼwakw nation, spent years working in a shed nearby, replacing decaying originals with his own precise reproductions so the stories carved into the wood could survive.
