Trounce Alley is a narrow brick passage squeezed between Government and Broad Streets, marked by wrought iron lamp posts and a distinct lack of vehicle traffic. Named for Thomas Trounce, a Cornish stonemason who arrived in Victoria in eighteen fifty-eight, the alley served as the site for his business ventures and real estate development. Trounce built several of the original structures here to house shops and offices, creating a quiet thoroughfare that bypassed the busy main streets during the city's early expansion.
