Helmcken House Pioneer Doctor's Residence

The Helmcken House features a white picket fence and a steeply gabled roof, distinguishing it from the neighboring modern structures in downtown Victoria. Built in eighteen fifty-two by John Sebastian Helmcken, the building served as a home and a medical office for the Hudson's Bay Company doctor. Helmcken arrived on Vancouver Island to serve the colonial outpost, and he kept his medical bag and surgical tools in the small study where he once treated patients during the early years of the British Columbia colony.
