McPherson Playhouse

The McPherson Playhouse features a distinct, rounded copper dome that stands out above the surrounding streetscape. Thomas Shanks McPherson, a local businessman, funded this building in nineteen fourteen as a gift to the city. He stipulated that the theater provide entertainment for all residents, regardless of their background. The venue originally opened as a silent movie palace, with a staff member tasked solely with operating the massive pipe organ to accompany the films. It remains one of Canada's oldest continuously operating theaters.
