Gate of Harmonious Interest

The Gate of Harmonious Interest stands in the heart of Victoria’s Chinatown, marked by its vivid red pillars and five tiered roofs covered in glazed ceramic tiles. It was built in nineteen eighty-one to serve as the entrance to Canada’s oldest Chinatown. Artisans from Suzhou, China, constructed the gate using traditional joinery without a single nail. Beneath the central arch, the stone lions carved by local hands represent a permanent connection between the city’s early Chinese settlers and the community today.
