Carr House National Historic Site

The Carr House in Victoria stands out with its sharp, steeply pitched gables and the pale, classic exterior of a nineteenth-century English cottage. This house served as the birthplace and childhood home of the writer and painter Emily Carr. Her father, Richard Carr, built the residence in eighteen seventy-nine to accommodate his growing family. Inside these walls, Emily struggled against the rigid Victorian expectations of her parents, eventually finding the creative independence that defined her later work.
