Bastion Books holds a narrow, three-story brick facade on Wharf Street, distinguished by the weathered wooden sign hanging above the doorway. This building started as a warehouse in eighteen eighty-five, back when ships pulled up right against the wharf to unload cargo. Inside, the shop floors are crowded with over forty thousand titles, creating a maze of shelves that reach toward the ceiling. The current owner, a former English teacher, took over the shop in nineteen ninety-eight to preserve its character.
