Notre-Dame-de-Bon-Secours Chapel

The Notre-Dame-de-Bon-Secours Chapel stands out with its copper roof and the statue of the Virgin Mary extending her hands toward the Saint Lawrence River. Marguerite Bourgeoys, a French teacher who arrived in New France in sixteen fifty-three, raised funds to build this stone sanctuary for sailors. After a fire gutted the original structure in seventeen fifty-four, workers rebuilt the chapel using the old foundation. Sailors once brought small wooden ships as votive offerings, hanging them from the ceiling in gratitude for safe voyages.
