Bonsecours Market

The Bonsecours Market features a silver dome that rises above the stone facade like a polished helmet. Built in eighteen forty-seven, it served as the main public market for Montreal and briefly housed the Parliament of the Province of Canada. During a riot in eighteen forty-nine, protestors threw stones through the windows while lawmakers argued inside, eventually setting the building on fire. The flames damaged the structure, but workers repaired the masonry, and it remains a center for local craft shops today.
