Place d'Armes

The Place d'Armes features a central monument to Paul de Chomedey, the founder of Montreal, standing amidst a complex mix of architectural eras. This public square served as a military parade ground during the seventeenth century, functioning as a site for training and drills. In sixteen eighty-nine, Iroquois warriors attacked the French settlers here, turning the military space into a front line. Today, the square remains defined by its stark contrast between the intricate stonework of the Notre-Dame Basilica and neighboring modern glass skyscrapers.
