The Baluarte de San Ignacio rises as a thick, angular stone wedge jutting into the harbor waters of Cartagena. It served as a vital anchor for the city's western defensive walls, specifically built to prevent enemy ships from landing near the vital entrance to the bay. In seventeen forty-one, during the Siege of Cartagena, the Spanish defenders positioned their cannons here to fire upon the incoming British fleet commanded by Edward Vernon. The masonry still bears deep scars from those cannonballs today.
